Who are we?

ALG&Associates is a law firm that has more than 100 lawyers and 11 offices across Japan. Under the philosophy of “pursuit of professionalism”, we have established dedicated divisions and accumulated specialised know-hows. Not many Japanese law firms have such a system. In Japan, we deal with corporate labour legal affairs and real estate affairs from our corporate clients’ point of views. With the wealth of the knowledge and proven results, we have held many seminars and contributed to a number of journals.

Establishment of our ASEAN Division

We have been contacted by many Japanese corporate clients that have been greatly investing in ASEAN countries with regard to legal/tax affairs.

We have established an “ASEAN” division to pursue our expertise in legal affairs in ASEAN countries and meet our clients’ needs. The office is located in Bangkok,Thailand, which is one of ASEAN’s core cities.

The Thailand office has a Japanese lawyer with a 13-year tax and legal affairs experience;therefore we can offer localised legal services.

The manager of The Thailand office, Tsutomu Kawamura, passed a bar exam in 1992. He was qualified in Japan, but had worked at a tax accounting office in Thailand for 13 years from 2007 to 2020, and dealt with a wide range of tax, legal and labour affairs. Our ASEAN division can provide localised legal services such as conducting investigations in Thailand in addition to the legal services from Japan.

  • As for tax affairs the Japanese corporate clients that have expanded their business into Thailand face on a regular basis, we can explain and give advice on potential risks that lie when making transactions on the basis of the tax office and court precedents in Thailand. We are also experienced in tax audits and claiming/negotiating tax refunds.
  • Furthermore, we have extensive experience in advising our clients on labour issues, dismissals, and being in the presence of labour lawsuits in Thailand. With the tactics we acquired through tax/legal due diligence, we are capable of conducting investigations in subsidiaries in Thailand with regards to M&A of local corporations.

When we have consultations with our clients, we consider matters from all aspects such as tax/labour affairs, Companies Act, and other laws and regulations and propose solutions to them.

To our clients, it may look as if their law/tax affairs are single dimensional. However, When it comes to tax and law affairs in Thailand, one consultation/investigation is often interrelated with various laws and regulations such as tax affairs, labour affairs, corporate law affairs, foreign investment regulations, Investment Promotion Act-related affairs, visas/work permits. The Thai office doesn't just answer queries from clients; we also look at matters from diversified viewpoints including potential issues that might arise and give comprehensive advice and consultations to our clients.
